Midweek: estate sale, v. 9 + kit transformation from With Strings Attached

Yesterday was month #9 of Barb M's estate sale and I couldn't NOT go.   Paula and her helpers have become friends over the months.  Several quilting friends were among the shoppers.  The proceeds benefit a different charity each month, this time Kenosha food pantries.  From September to April they've given away $15,500 after expenses (storage unit, hotel meeting room, laundering).   Of course I don't *need* any more fabric!

40 yards by weight, $2.00 per yard.

Also, two packages of printer fabric for $5.00.

These vintage blocks were $15.  120 6", 250+ 4". I ...

Weekly update: convention and a trove of quilts from With Strings Attached

The AAUW-Illinois convention was held at Elgin Community College on Friday evening and all day Saturday.

Though the Illinois Division (as the state organizations were called) was organized in 1924, the Chicago, Inc., Branch was chartered in 1889 followed by Champaign-Urbana (1901), Springfield (1906), Rock Island-Moline (1909), Aurora (1919), Elgin (1920), Quincy (1923), and Monmouth (1924).   My branch, Waukegan, was chartered in 1928.

The focus of the state convention is about learning and building skills to be better advocates for AAUW's mission of advancing gender equity.  Dr. Suzanne Chod, North Central College, talked about the how and why of ...

1940s Lone Star from Humble Quilts

One of the last quilts I opened from the estate was this beauty! It has been well loved.

Lovely hand quilting

I'm assuming it is from the 1940's.
The biggest problem with this quilt is the binding is pretty much non existent.  It was the color of the final blue tip. I think I'll see if I have a solid blue similar, replace it and keep this one. At least for awhile.

Have a terrific weekend!

New England Quilt Museum part 3 from Humble Quilts

Here are some of my favorites that were on display. These are part of the NEQM collection.

This quilt was huge and hard to photograph.

Keep an eye on the sashing of this quilt.

Simple but effective and so charming!

Here's a sweet dolly quilt in the NEQM collection.

The quilt Laura holds (on the right) was the little quilt she made for me for the Humble Quilt swap!

And here it is up close and personal. I LOVE it and treasure it!

I hope you enjoyed the exhibits I shared from the New England Quilt Museum.

This and That from Humble Quilts

As soon as I got home from CA I had a day to repack and Cory and I were off to Montana!

Our mission was a field trip to check out a warehouse that builds prefab log cabins.

Meanwhile we had time to spare so these quilts were a few I saw at antique stores.

This one was my fav!

Love the red print and fat sashing!

Happy little spring quilt!

Don't see too many mounted bear heads in Oregon antique stores.

We went for a short walk through a wildlife refuge. The Bitterroot mountains looked amazing with the ...

A Vintage Little Quilt from Humble Quilts

A sweet online friend, Julie, sent me this adorable little quilt top! She saw it at an antique shop and thought of me! Oh my goodness, that touches my heart! Thank you Julie!

The blocks are handpieced. Look at this wonderful print!

The setting squares are machine pieced so I believe that part came later. Love this cheddar on blue print! I want to baste it and quilt it as is!!

I took part in a Meet the Teacher event online this past Saturday. This is where guilds meet teachers to possibly hire for their guild. It was a wonderful ...

Antique Quilts and Textiles from Humble Quilts

Here are a few quilts and clothing from our stops at antique stores in Virginia.

This was one of the favorites that got away! The seller wouldn't budge on the price.

What a fun folk art style eagle!

This was at the VA quilt museum shop.

What's not to love about double pink and poison green?!

I'll be home today and have no plans to go anywhere for awhile!
Have an amazing weekend friends!

Good use of a panel! I sure notice panel quilts these days!

They have a little "quilt store" that the proceeds go to help support the Colony Museum.

Friday check in: a field trip with quilts from With Strings Attached

Back in January Mary (Zippy Quilts) wrote this post about the Ken Burns quilt collection. I looked it up and found out the exhibit's next venue was Peoria, opening March 5 and closing June 5.  I thought I'd meet a downstate friend and combine the museum with fabric shopping, but we never firmed up plans. I thought I'd create an itinerary to visit other downstate sites that I never seem to have time to see.   Meanwhile gas prices have soared and my calendar has filled up.  Now or never!  We went yesterday about 8:45 and got ...

Weekly update: design twice, sew once; a vintage gift; and reading from With Strings Attached

This afternoon was our first forest preserve/beach walk in weeks.    I stayed on the shore and zoomed in to get the ice photos.  It's dangerous to walk out on the pack ice.  (Upper right: a fallen tree encased in ice.)

"Design twice, sew once" is the corollary to the better-known "measure twice, cut once."  I changed the inner pink border fabric for another pink print AFTER I had the middle round of pinwheels sewn on.  Ripping and re-piecing took an evening (punctuated by the Olympics).  This photo shows the final borders sewn to the sides.  The top border ...

Vintage quilt for your home decor from Pieced Brain

Vintage quilt for your home decor

Looking for a vintage quilt for your home decor? Here’s a project that is sure to add enduring appeal with classic vibes to your home.

Kitchen shelves, wooden surface, and pink fridge on white background. White kitchen interior countertop. Photo by American Quilter magazine. Used with permission.

I love how this quilt turned out! I named it Vintage Kitchen because the palette reminded me of that fun era of soft pink, blue, aqua, and simple, unadorned lines on everything in the kitchen.

Vintage Kitchen features fabrics from the Adel in Spring collection by Sandy Gervais for Riley Blake Designs ...

Happy New Year!
It was great to take a couple of week break from blogging to close out the year.

Here's a new little quilt I made!

I call it Tea for Two

I used a cute pinwheel shirting on the back.

After washing.

Here's the precious vintage doll quilt I used for inspiration!

And, drum roll.................................

I opened an Etsy shop!

I have a kit made up for the "Tea for Two" little quilt. I also am offering a PDF pattern. If you'd prefer I mailed a pattern let me know.

Vintage Little Humble Quilt from Humble Quilts

I told my sweet friend, Laurie, that the only "payment" I wanted to advertise some of her lovely goods on the facebook group was to make sure I had a place to sleep the next time I made it to her house.
I'm sure she will still honor that, but she also sent me this adorable little quilt I shared on facebook during the show she was vending at.

It is the epitome of a humble quilt!

Ira Woods was an optometrist in the 40's and 50's and I would date this quilt about the same.

I Like Thursday: trip preparation, guild rummage sale, and donation follow up from With Strings Attached

We leave tomorrow morning for our trip east -- Road Scholar and granddaughter's wedding with sight seeing before, between, and after.  No blog posts until the end of October. . . . and no time for wildflower or even garden photos!

While I'm away my sewing machine will be in the shop for a much-needed cleaning.

# # # # # #

Last evening our guild had a members' rummage sale.  $20 per table.  I split with Irene -- I had a table and a half and  she had the other half.  I packed boxes with books, patterns, notions, kits, and fabric. Every time I turned around I found ...

Weekly update: quilt rescue and reading from With Strings Attached

Be sure to read the previous post to see the week's wildflowers and other activities.

On the way back from a lake shore walk we saw two cranes at the edge of a pond in the park.  I was able to get pretty close to them.

This weekend there was an estate sale about three blocks away.   I had walked past the house often but I didn't know the people who lived there.  (I looked them up: he died in 2012 and she died earlier this year.) I went on Saturday when  everything was 50% off.

There were ...

This and That on a Friday! from Humble Quilts

I found this adorable crib size quilt from the 30's-40's in my closet while hunting for the "missing" blocks.  It was so charming! I hung it up in my room to consider what I should do with it and admire it up close and personal.

Look at the terrific binding! 2 sides green, 2 sides blue

It has a bit of simple cross hatch quilting through some of the 4 patches.

And then some small ties with thin floss.

It is very lightweight with no batting and very sturdy. I don't understand how the black is stitched ...
